To achieve maximum performance with every Zipp wheelset, our engineers create uniquely tuned rim profiles for every combination of rim depth and tire style. So the process of developing the 808 Firecrest® Carbon Clincher was much more complex than merely adding clincher sidewalls to the 808 Tubular or increasing the depth of the 404 Firecrest Carbon Clincher.
Optimizing the revolutionary Firecrest aero-rim concept for an 81 mm depth and the distinct airflow pattern of clincher tires required us to evaluate a slew of minutely varied prototypes through CFD, or computational fluid dynamics, software and in the wind tunnel. At 27.5 mm wide, the final version is the fastest deep-section carbon clincher in the world. Yet, with a weight of only 1,763 grams, it more than holds its own on the climbs. New for 2012, the 808 is available in a classic Falcon Grey or our new stealthy Beyond Black color scheme. Both feature our updated 88/188 hubs, with a 7.5 mm-wider rear bearing stance, and a 2-degree cant on the non-driveside flange for increased stiffness and reliability.
With Firecrest’s unparalleled approach to the wheel’s center of pressure, the 808 Firecrest Carbon Clincher also handles crosswinds with the stability you’d normally associate with a much shallower rim – making the 808 Carbon Clincher ideal for non-disc-legal courses like Kona. Plus, the wide rim shape provides efficient power transfer along with comfort and durability, making it an excellent choice for just about any terrain and riding style.
In addition to Firecrest, all Zipp full-Carbon Clinchers feature an exclusive heat-resistant resin as part of the composite structure. Utilized in the 808 Firecrest Carbon Clincher, this technology prevents spikes in rim temperature and tire pressure that can impact performance and handling. In fact, heat dissipation is improved so substantially that ours are the only carbon clinchers to pass stringent European safety testing without limitations on rider weight or brake-pad options. So every rider can tackle even the longest, most technical descents with confidence.
For triathletes and road racers seeking superior aero performance, stable handling, and the convenience of clinchers, there’s no faster all-around wheelset than the 808 Firecrest Carbon Clincher.

The 808 changed perceptions about deep-section wheels. At first, its 81 mm-deep profile appeared only in time trials and triathlons. And sure enough, its early incarnations netted numerous Grand Tour stage wins and Ironman® world championship at Kona. Still, it didn’t take long before Zipp riders discovered that the 808’s light weight, responsiveness, and solid handing are ideally suited to hilly bike legs, criteriums, field sprints and long days off the front of the peloton.
Now, with the new Firecrest® rim shape, the 808 has improved in almost every metric. In fact, the 808 Firecrest is the fastest front wheel we’ve ever tested. Its 27.5 mm-wide profile is 15 seconds faster than before over 40 km, and now equals or exceeds the performance of any 90 mm-deep rim on the market as well as many discs. At high wind angles, the 808’s aero advantage is even greater, yet Firecrest also makes the 808 remarkably stable.
Essentially, the 808 Firecrest provides the speed of a much deeper rim with the handling of a much shallower one. On windy non-disc-legal course like Kona, that counts for a lot. And in Firecrest’s first crack at elite-level competition, Chris “Macca” McCormack rode it to a win on the Big Island in 2010.
With its wider profile, the latest 808 Firecrest Tubular also shows improved lateral stiffness for efficient power transfer and crisp acceleration, yet offers greater comfort and impact resistance than its predecessor.
Pro triathletes like Macca build their seasons around a few crucial events where aerodynamics are everything. Pro cyclists on teams such as Saxo Bank and Exergy TWENTY12 log scores of race days every year with huge variations in weather, terrain and tactics. No matter what approach you take, the 808 Tubular with Firecrest technology provides top-shelf aerodynamics with a remarkable versatility to take on whatever challenge you’re facing.
